Names of victims

woven into memorial tapestry

2

The NAMES Project is a nationwide campaign to memorialize the tens of thousands of Americans who have already been killed by the AIDS epidemic. The memorial will be made of thousands of individual fabric panels, each bearing the name of one person lost to AIDS.

Designed and constructed in the homes of lovers, friends, and families of the victims, the panels will be assembled into one massive expanse and displayed on the Capitol Mall on Oct. 11. It will serve as a positive expression of personal loss as well as a dramatic illustration of the impact of AIDS on American society.

Some panels were created individually as a personal memorial to a loved one. However, mariy more are following the tradition of sewing bees: involving friends, families, and Coworkers in the design of the panels.

Michael Smith, General Manager of the NAMES Project, stresses that the display of the parels in Washington is really the beginning, not the end. It is hoped that the living memorial can make ત nation-wide tour,
